Tax Credits & Benefits in Canada: What You Can Claim in 2024

Tax credits and benefits can make a huge difference in your financial situation, but keeping track of them can feel overwhelming—especially when rules change every year. 

To help you maximize your return this tax season, we’ve compiled the most common and valuable tax credits available nationwide and for each province and territory in Canada.

Nationwide Tax Credits & Benefits 

No matter where you live in Canada, the following federal tax credits and benefits apply to you: 

Canada Child Benefit (CCB) 

A tax-free monthly payment for families with children under 18 years old.
💰 Maximum payments for July 2024 – June 2025: 

  • $7,787 per year per child under 6 
  • $6,570 per year per child aged 6-17 
  • Additional payments available for children with disabilities 

📌 Tip: This benefit is income-tested, so payments decrease as family income increases. 

 

GST/HST Credit 

A quarterly, tax-free payment designed to help low-to-moderate-income individuals offset sales taxes. 

💰 For July 2024 – June 2025: 

  • Singles can receive up to $519 annually 
  • Couples can receive up to $680 annually 

📌 Tip: This credit is automatically applied when you file your tax return—no need to apply! 

 

Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) 

Designed to support low-income working Canadians with a refundable tax credit. 

💰 Maximum CWB in 2024: 

  • $1,590 for single individuals (earning up to $26,149) 
  • $2,739 for families (earning up to $29,833) 
  • Additional disability supplement available 

📌 Tip: If you qualified for CWB in 2023, you’ll receive three advance payments in July, October 2024, and January 2025. 

 

Canada Dental Care Plan (New for 2024!) 

This new federal dental program covers dental care for eligible Canadians who don’t have private dental insurance. 

💰 Who qualifies? 

  • Children under 18, seniors (65+), and people with disabilities 
  • Must have a family income of less than $90,000 

📌 Tip: The full rollout of the program is happening throughout 2024 and 2025. 

 

Canada Carbon Rebate (Formerly Climate Action Incentive) 

A quarterly payment to offset carbon taxes for households in: 

  • Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland & Labrador 
  • Not available in BC, Quebec, or the territories 

💰 Family of four could receive between $760 and $1,800 annually, depending on location. 

📌 Tip: Rural residents receive a 20% supplement—all of PEI is classified as rural!

Alberta 

  • Alberta Child & Family Benefit (ACFB) – Tax-free payments for low-income families 
  • Alberta is Calling Moving Bonus$5,000 tax credit for skilled trades workers moving to Alberta (Applications open May 1, 2025) 
  • New Electric Vehicle Tax (2025)$200 annual tax on electric vehicles starting January 2025 

 

British Columbia 

  • BC Climate Action Tax Credit – Up to $504 per adult to offset carbon taxes 
  • BC Renter’s Tax Credit – Up to $400 for renters earning under $60,000 
  • New Home Flipping Tax (2025)20% tax on homes sold within 1 year of purchase 

 

Manitoba 

  • Renters Tax Credit – Increased to $575 per year for 2025 
  • Fertility Treatment Tax Credit – Maximum claimable expenses doubled from $20,000 to $40,000 
  • Primary Caregiver Tax Credit – $1,400 refundable credit for family caregivers 

 

New Brunswick 

  • New Brunswick Workers Benefit – One-time $300 payment for low-income workers 
  • School Supplement$100 per child to help with back-to-school supplies 

 

Newfoundland & Labrador 

  • Physical Activity Tax Credit – Up to $2,000 per household for sport and recreational programs 
  • Seniors’ Benefit – Tax-free payment of $1,516 for seniors 65+ 

 

Nova Scotia 

  • Poverty Reduction Credit – Up to $500 annually for low-income individuals 
  • Affordable Living Tax Credit – Up to $255 per family, plus $60 per child 

 

Nunavut 

  • Nunavut Cost of Living Tax Credit – Refundable credit to offset high living costs 
  • Nunavut Child Benefit$347 per child annually for low-income families 

 

Ontario 

  • Ontario Trillium Benefit – Combined sales, energy, and property tax credits 
  • Low-Income Individuals & Families Tax (LIFT) CreditUp to $875 in tax savings 
  • New Ontario Guaranteed Annual Income Supplement (GAINS) – Increased monthly payments for low-income seniors 

 

Prince Edward Island 

  • Children’s Wellness Tax Credit – Up to $500 per child for arts & sports 
  • PEI Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit$1,000 refundable credit 

 

Quebec 

  • Solidarity Tax Credit – Helps low-income individuals with housing and sales tax costs 
  • Work Premium Tax Credit – Encourages employment by providing additional income support 
  • New Home-Support Services for Seniors Credit – Tax relief for seniors receiving in-home care 

 

Saskatchewan 

  • Saskatchewan Low-Income Tax Credit (SLITC) – Automatically applied for low-to-middle-income residents
